R’N’B Single Campaign To Combat 40,000 Household Fires By Encouraging Smoke Alarm Testing!

UK FIRE MINISTER BOB NEIL is backing an innovative music campaign by the UK Fire Service which aims to stamp out household fires within the UK. A cutting edge R’N’B single and music video featuring COREY “SMAN” CAMPBELL will be released on the 22nd November in what has been described as a cutting edge fire safety communication campaign.

The UK Fire Service is hoping to make history by being the first fire and rescue emergency service in the UK to have an R’N’B single in the charts! The fire safety awareness single “FIRE” aims to directly combat the 40,000 household fires which occur every year across the UK which don’t have a smoke alarm fitted or working and more particularly the (BEM) Black Ethnic Minority households in local communities.

To achieve this the UK Fire Service & WMFS (West Midlands Fire Service), one of the largest fire and rescue organisations in the country, have teamed up with talented Birmingham R’N’B singer/songwriter COREY “SMAN” CAMPBELL and recorded the R’N’B single and music video “FIRE” to promote fire safety and encourage smoke alarm testing in the across the UK.

WMFS is at the forefront of community focussed safety campaigns and has been the driving force in the campaign teaming up R’N’B singer/songwriter COREY “S-MAN” CAMPBELL with 5AM RECORDS (producers of USHER, LEMAR & KELLY ROWLAND) and R&B video producer DANIEL ALEXANDER to produce an R’N’B single and promotional video that communicates an effective fire safety message.

In 2008-2009 there were 39,000 house fires in the UK. In addition, DCLG (Department For Communities and Local Government) estimate that approximately 12% of all household fires were related to (BEM) Black Ethnic Minority households who had not fitted a smoke alarm. The Fire Service aims to use the record as a credible and effective means of communicating the fire safety message and the importance of fitting a smoke alarm directly to the target demographic of 18-44 BEM households.

The record, which was written and recorded by COREY “S-MAN” CAMPBELL also features singer NIGEL HINDS. “FIRE” is part of the national “FIRE KILLS” safety awareness campaign and is aimed specifically at the African Caribbean community in the 18-44 age demographic, single and living in rented accommodation, which is identified as the most “at risk community”. The campaign aims to deliver the important message of fire safety and the importance of fitting smoke alarms in the home.

UK FIRE MINISTER BOB NEILL said of the campaign; “It’s great to see a fire service thinking creatively, actively working with their local community to deliver vital fire safety messages to young people and also encouraging them to tell their friends and family. There are some very simple steps you can take to reducing the risks from fire in your home, most importantly, fit a smoke alarm and test it regularly. I wish the record and the artists behind it great success.”

The “FIRE” record and music video, is the brainchild of WMFS Faith Education Officer Adam Harper who said; “The FIRE safety awareness record is unique in a number of ways. Primarily it is an effective and powerful tool in which to communicate a highly effective message to a very specific target community in a language which they understand, the language of R’N’B music. The local community are more likely to listen, understand the message and take action from this when it is being conveyed to them in a record that is authentic, engaging and memorable.”

“There is even more pressure on our departments now to do the same job of promoting fire safety with minimal resources and even more emphasis for us to be resourceful and innovative. If someone listens to this song and it reminds them to check their smoke alarm, or if someone calls us to have some free fire alarms fitted, then the song has achieved its purpose and awareness and this will save lives.”
